The City of Armadale has warmly welcomed Premier Colin Barnett’s recent announcement of the State Government’s commitment of $86 million to build a stateof-the-art justice complex, in the City of Armadale.

The new complex would almost triple the number of courtrooms and accommodate around 315 police officers, a dramatic increase on the 80 officers currently working from the police station.

The new police station will be a major regional hub for local police teams, rapid response teams and detectives and will be equipped with the latest resources to help combat crime and antisocial behaviour in Armadale and surrounding suburbs.

Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM JP said he was delighted to attend the media conference with the Premier Hon Colin Barnett MLA, Police Minister the Hon Liza Harvey and Attorney General, the Hon Michael Mischin MLC to hear the announcement first hand.

“This is great news for Armadale. It has been the City’s vision for many years for the Armadale Strategic Metropolitan Centre to develop a Civic Precinct, which required the re-location of the courthouse and police station.

“This, of course, will have a significant economic impact to the business community as it will bring an increase in the number of police and court personnel working in our City Centre.”

“The City first presented the urgent need for key government infrastructure to cater for the rapidly growing population of the district, during the Premier’s visit to Armadale in February 2010.

“The current courthouse and police station were built in the 80s, when the City of Armadale was a much smaller place and the town centre had far fewer facilities, and is now struggling to cope with the districts rapid growth.

“Today, with Armadale a bustling Strategic Metropolitan Centre, the courthouse is extremely busy and is far too small for the functions it serves.

“The City has also outgrown its own facilities and will now be able to plan more effectively for the long term future of the city centre and the growth anticipated between now and 2051.

“We have been advised that ground works on the Armadale justice complex could commence as early as mid-2017 and we now look forward to working with the State Government on the design and planning process”, Mayor Zelones said.
