The City of Armadale is inviting residents to have their say on the draft concept plan for the major upgrade to the historic Armadale District Hall.
The Armadale District Hall was constructed in 1936 and over the years has seen only minor improvements.
The draft concept plan has been developed to preserve the historic aspects of the building as well as provide a functional facility for many years to come.
The City has engaged specialist Heritage Architects to undertake the work that will be considered by the Heritage Council of WA.
Design options under consideration include enlarging the main hall space by partial or complete removal of the mezzanine gallery which was installed in 1938, two years after the hall was opened.
Mayor Henry Zelones said the upgrade includes additions to the building as well as internal renovations to improve functionality of the kitchen, meeting rooms, and storage and service access.
“We are keen to also preserve the social history of the Hall as it was a central place in the community, providing a venue for a variety of social occasions that included debutante balls, movie shows, weekly dance classes and even funeral services.
“The City is keen to hear from older members of the community who may recollect other events and occasions that took place in the Hall in years gone by, that can be documented and included in the history of the Hall.
“We encourage and urge residents to make an individual submission and provide general feedback regarding the upgrade as this will assist us with the final design,” said Mayor Zelones.
Closing date for submissions is 14 November, 2014.
