The Champion Centre, located on Champion Drive in Seville Grove, hosted an event during Harmony week for Year 1 and 2 classes from Challis Primary, Groveland’s Primary and Kelmscott Primary.
Harmony Day is an annual celebration of Australia’s diversity and coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination; this year’s theme for Harmony Day was Many Stories – One Australia.
Mayor Henry Zelones said the children participated in cultural activities which included a traditional Aboriginal performance from the Maar Koodjal dance group.
“The children divided into groups to participate in sessions of arts and craft, a visit with Ranger Red and some native animals and enjoyed lots of fun with Jungle Sports games.
“The Harmony Day celebrations provided an excellent opportunity for the children to experience a slice of cultural diversity and celebrate the contributions of Indigenous people in the community,” said Mayor Zelones.
The Champion Centre provides a range of free, culturally-based programs and activities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the City of Armadale.
All programs are free and focused on building strong relationships amongst the local Indigenous communities and enhancing knowledge of the Noongar culture.
