Hail the haggis and behold the bagpipes!
The City of Armadale will once again host Western Australia’s largest Scottish themed event, the Highland Gathering, on Sunday 14 September, from 10am to 4pm at Armadale’s beautiful Minnawarra Park, situated on Armadale Road.
Every year the Highland Gathering attracts thousands of people from across the state, to soak up the spring sunshine in Minnawarra Park while they celebrate all things Scottish.
Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones said there’s a range of Celtic themed entertainment and activities happening throughout the day, including the highland and Irish dancing, the massed pipe band procession and the hotly contested pipe band competition.
“Among the day’s highlights are the traditional heavy events, which include putting the stone, wrestling and tossing the caber. We encourage members of the public to have a go and enter these events.
“We also have lots to keep the kids entertained with the popular Medieval Fair and woad face painting, and interactive workshops ensuring a day full of Celtic style fun for all the family.
“This year, preceding the much loved Highland Gathering, is the second year the City will host the Perth Kilt Run.
“We will be competing with our namesake cities from across the world, including Perth, Canada and Perth, United Kingdom, to see who has the most kilted runners.
“With runners coming from Perth, Canada for this year’s run we are asking Perth Western Australia to join forces and take on the challenge.
“So if you are an athlete, fun-runner, young or just young at heart, put on a kilt and register to take part in the 5 or 2.5 kilometre run, and join us to run, jog or walk around the beautiful parkland foothills in Armadale.
“You don’t need to be Scottish to join in the fun, simply bring your family and friends along and enjoy authentic Scottish food, Celtic music and Scottish culture right here in Armadale and if you need a kilt we can help you with that too,” said Mayor Zelones.
