Free native plants for residents

The City of Armadale is partnering with the Armadale Gosnells Landcare Group (AGLG) to provide residents with free native plants for their gardens.

Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said the program aims to promote the revegetation of urban residential properties with local native plants.

“Create a wildlife sanctuary area in your garden and reap the benefits of using local native plants in your backyard.

“Planting natives not only reduces weed invasion into bushland and helps control soil erosion, but also provides an array of environmental benefits.

“These ecological benefits include increasing flora diversity in residential areas, providing habitat diversity as well as shade and shelter for birds, reptiles and small native mammals.

“Native plants are also adapted to local climate and soil conditions and are therefore generally very water efficient and require minimal fertiliser.

“Staff from the City and AGLG will also be on hand to provide planting advice and other information about the most suitable plants for your area”, he said.

The event will be held at Rushton Park Pavilion in Kelmscott on Sunday 7 May from 9am to noon, with 3000 native seedlings available to residents.

Each eligible ratepayer will receive a total of 10 plants each for their property. However plants will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Residents must bring photo ID (driver’s license/ passport) and current City of Armadale Rates Notice (to verify address).
