The talents of young, local creative writers will be showcased again with entries opening for the annual Armadale Young Writers Awards.
Entries must be lodged with City of Armadale libraries by close of business on Monday 30 June 2014.
The prose-only award is open to students in Years 3 to 10 who reside, or attend school, in the City of Armadale. Stories must be 2000 words or less, and poetry cannot be accepted.
City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones said this type of competition would showcase the depth of local talent there is in our community.
“We have some promising young writers in Armadale and the Young Writers Awards are an opportunity to have their creative talent recognised,” said Mayor Zelones.
There are two categories in the competition: General Creative Writing and Living in the City of Armadale.
The General Creative Writing category features a 1st prize of $200, 2nd prize of $150, and 3rd prize of $100, awarded to each of the grade groups: Years 3 and 4; 5 and 6; 7 and 8; 9 and 10.
A single prize of $200 will be awarded to the winner of the Living in the City of Armadale category, to be judged across all age groups.
An extra prize will be awarded for the best overall entry. This will be judged from all the award winning entries, and the winner will receive a $50 book voucher.
The City will collate the stories by Armadale young Writers Award place getters into a book. These, along with a trophy and a certificate, will be presented to each place getter at the award ceremony.
A Perpetual Shield will be presented to the school of the student whose work is considered Best Overall.
For students that enter the Living in the City of Armadale category, and would like to know more about the area or past events and people, a wide range of relevant material is available to view at the Birtwistle Local Studies Library, located at the Armadale library.
To enter the Armadale Young Writers Award collect an entry form from Armadale, Kelmscott or Seville Grove library from 1 June, or download a form and more information from the City’s website www.armadale.wa.gov.au.
