Storm Awareness Week, which runs from 11 to 18 May, is a timely reminder for residents to ensure they have prepared their homes and properties for winter.

The winter storm season runs from May to October.

“Preparing your property for the winter storm season is vital. By simply taking basic actions you could significantly minimise the damage your home may sustain during a storm,” said Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM JP.

“Properly preparing your property also takes away the worry your family may experience if a storm hits,” he said.

To prepare your property:

  • Trim tree branches well clear of your house and vehicles.
  • Have a portable radio and torch with fresh batteries.
  • Have a first aid kit (and basic knowledge).
  • List your emergency contact numbers.
  • Clear the property of loose objects.
  • Clean and check your roof, guttering and down pipes.
  • Have masking tape (for glass), plastic sheeting and large garbage bags (for emergency rain protection).

Should your property be damaged, as a result of a storm, contact the Armadale SES on 132 500.

If you ever come across any fallen power lines stay well clear as they may still be live and call Western Power on 13 13 51.

Further information on how you can prepare your property this winter storm season can be found at www.dfes.wa.gov.au.
