To celebrate Disability Awareness Week the City of Armadale, in partnership with the Dale Cottages, is hosting a community luncheon ‘Celebrate in Style’ at the Greendale Centre on Thursday, 4 December.
Disability Awareness Week aims to recognise and share the achievements of individuals, communities, organisations, and local and state government that help to build a better future for people with a disability.
Currently, around one in five people in WA have a disability, and this is expected to rise to one in four within a decade due to the state’s ageing population.
Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones said that the awareness week highlights the importance of supporting people with disabilities, and brings it to the community's attention.
"The state government’s ‘Count Me In’ vision is for all people to live in welcoming communities that facilitate citizenship, friendship, mutual support and a fair go for everyone.
"With our ageing population, everyone either knows of someone, or has a family member living with a disability. Unfortunately disability can occur at any time in a person’s life, or may be present from birth.
“It is important that services, facilities, employment, recreation, housing and other areas of life are developed to meet people’s needs throughout their lives, said Mayor Zelones.
The event ‘Celebrate in Style’ consists of a two course luncheon, starting at midday and includes entertainment, raffles, lucky door prizes and a complimentary drink on arrival for the cost of $15 per person.
Entertainment will be provided by Bodie Huts from Community Radio 107.3HFM, with a selection of songs from Frank Sinatra through the ages. Bodie is a worthy ambassador for people with a disability as he has a disability himself.
