Commemorative plaques
Release Date:
Friday, 13 May 2016

The City of Armadale is inviting community members to nominate local sites of historic significance on which to install commemorative plaques.

The City has previously committed to a series of plaques including heritage plaques; placed on public and private buildings listed in the City’s Municipal Heritage Inventory; and memorial plaques placed in parks and reserves that hold historic significance of the person or group the park/reserve is named after.

Other historic sites within the City deemed worthy of a plaque which previously didn’t qualify for memorial or heritage plaques are now being given consideration.

City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said that ideally, the plaques would be placed on historic sites that no longer have the original infrastructure in place. These include sites of schools no longer operating, sites such as the Dorset Hostel, and sites of some of the old businesses and industries that once flourished in the area.

“Given the broad community interest in the district’s history as well as tourism interest, we would like to stimulate public interest in historic sites and place plaques at appropriate places that have not been formally recognised by other means such as the Municipal Heritage Inventory or the official naming processes of the Planning Services Committee,” he said.

“We are inviting community members to recommend historic sites using a submission form that requires historical information related to the site, and any documentation or photographs of the area.”

The submission will be assessed by the History Reference Group.
