The City of Armadale has been selected as one of 21 local governments to undertake a new program designed to streamline approval processes for small businesses.

The Small Business Friendly Approvals Program will make it easier to start, operate and grow a business within Western Australia, enabling a smoother transition between businesses and local government to access business permits and licences.

The program is funded by the WA Government, which aims to accelerate regulatory reform to boost economic recovery amongst small business affected by the impact of COVID-19.

“The City of Armadale is pleased to be one of the first local governments in WA selected to undertake this initiative,” said Mayor Ruth Butterfield.

“It’s great to be able to partner with the SBDC and small business in the area to fine tune services and streamline our processes. Working together, we will create an operating environment that is supportive and easy to navigate, for our small business community.

“The Small Business Friendly Approvals Program will not only benefit our existing local businesses, but will also make it easier for new businesses to establish themselves in our City, supporting innovation, investment and job creation.”

Small Business Commissioner David Eaton congratulated the City of Armadale on its selection to participate in the Program.

“The City has already demonstrated their strong commitment to supporting their local small business sector. Since joining the SBDC’s Small Business Friendly Local Governments initiative in 2017, they have delivered on a range of commitments including engaging regularly with their small business sector to seek input and offer support and advice; launching an online localised business network; and responding to the needs of small businesses in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Through the Approvals Program, the SBDC will work closely with the City of Armadale to analyse and streamline the local government’s approvals process — saving small business owners time and money and ultimately making it easier to start, operate and grow a business in Armadale.

“I applaud the City for their commitment to the success of their local businesses and look forward to seeing the impact of this regulatory reform on the success and growth of small businesses in Armadale.”

The program, commencing this month, will run for 12 weeks, and will involve weekly workshops delivered by the cross functional working group, comprising of representatives from key service areas such as Planning, Health, Building, Economic Development and Customer Service.
