Release Date:
Monday, 22 May 2023

Calling on aspiring young writers in the community – put pen to paper and get ready to enter the Armadale Young Writers’ Awards.

This creative writing competition is open to all students in Years 3 to Year 12 who reside, or attend school in the City of Armadale. Entries must be prose only and stories should be 2,000 words or less. Poetry, scripts or graphic novels will not be accepted.

Mayor Ruth Butterfield said the Armadale Young Writers' Awards aims to promote a love of writing and provides a wonderful opportunity to encourage students in the art of creative writing.

“The competition, now in its 13th year of production, showcases the incredible imagination and creativity of young people in our community and provides an opportunity to develop their writing skills and have their work recognised,” said Mayor Butterfield.

There are five categories for prose entries with a first prize of $200, second prize of $150, and third prize of $100 awarded in each category. Entries will be judged in the following grade groups of years 3 & 4, 5 & 6, 7 & 8, 9 & 10 and 11 & 12.

The best overall story will be chosen from all award winning entries and receive a book voucher. Each place getter will also receive a trophy, certificate and a copy of the anthology of winning entries.

This online competition is open from 1 to 30 June 2023, and access to the entry form will only be available during this time.
