Inspiring and encouraging young people to take up the small business mantle and become the City’s future business leaders is the basis behind a new program being introduced by the City of Armadale in partnership with Business Foundations.

The PRODIG[Y] Young Entrepreneurs Program is a three-week, accredited training and mentoring program starting in May for people aged 18 to 25.

A modified version of the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme funded by the Federal Government, Armadale will be one of the first local governments in Australia to launch PRODIG[Y] for young entrepreneurs.

The program will provide training in small business management, business skills and business plan development.

To qualify for the PRODIG[Y] program, the person must be aged 18 to 25, unemployed or underemployed and working less than 15 hours a week.

Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM JP said the PRODIG[Y] program would provide the ideal launch pad for young people who possess great business ideas but were unsure about how to develop them into a working business model.

“There are many young people who aspire to be small business owners and create self-sustaining economic opportunities for themselves and others but who might lack the nous or know-how to get started,” he said.

“The PRODIG[Y] program provides the ideal avenue to encourage the development of their ideas into functional business models in anticipation of starting their business and becoming their own bosses.”

Those interested in participating in the program are invited to attend a free, oneday Idea Generator workshop to meet other like-minded young entrepreneurs, develop business ideas, and potentially qualify for the PRODIG[Y] program.

The workshop will be conducted by Business Foundations on Friday, 7 April from 9am to 5pm at the Armadale Library. Places are limited and bookings will close on 1 April.
