Each year the City of Armadale hosts two plenary sessions on behalf of the Bushcare Environmental Working Group (BEWG), covering a range of environmental topics.
During the plenary sessions the community has the opportunity to hear from a range of informative and passionate presenters on topics of interest, including conservation and rehabilitation.
The first BEWG plenary for this year will be on Botanical Heritage and Conservation in the Armadale region. This will be presented by Dr Adam Cross, a Research Fellow at the Department of Environment and Agriculture at Curtin University.
Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said the greater Armadale region harbours an exceptional biodiversity, particularly for carnivorous plants and other ecological and botanical oddities.
“For example, our region has more Drosera (commonly known as sundews – a sucker plant) than any other metropolitan area in the world.
“Indeed, Armadale is a stronghold for some of the most at-risk plant species in Western Australia, and these require careful management if they are to be preserved for future generations”, he said.
Dr Adam Cross has worked as a Restoration Ecologist since completing a Ph.D. in Botany at the University of Western Australia. Adam’s research interests include rehabilitation of degraded sites, community ecology, seed biology, the conservation and ecology of freshwater aquatic ecosystems and carnivorous plants.
There will be an opportunity for questions and answers with Dr Cross at the end of the presentation, which will be held at the City of Armadale Function Room, Tuesday 2 April from 6.30 to 8.30pm.
Bookings are essential for catering purposes. RSVP by 26 March to info@armadale.wa.gov.au or call 9394 5000.
