The City of Armadale is continuing to support the National Growth Areas Alliance in conducting the National Nightmare Commute Day, on Thursday, 14 September.
With a commitment to reducing traffic congestion for residents, the City of Armadale launched the Community Connect South (CCS) project three years ago, in partnership with its neighbour the City of Cockburn.
Through a lobbying campaign, the Cities attracted 14.5M of funding allocated to widening Armadale Road between Anstey Road and Tapper Drive.
The recent State election has also seen the commitment of a further $237M to build the Armadale Road/North Lake Road bridge over the Kwinana Freeway.
Mayor Henry Zelones OAM said there is no doubt that the Western Australian population is growing at a rapid rate. The City of Armadale was the 10th fastest local government authority during the 2015-2016 year experiencing a 4% growth rate and shows no signs of slowing down.
“This sort of population surge needs infrastructure, including support through our road and path network to cut down travel times, and deliver more travel options for our community,” Mayor Zelones said.
The City of Armadale is a member of the NGAA, which instigated the National Nightmare Commute Day, designed to send a message to the Federal Government that five million Australians living in fast-growing outer suburbs such as Armadale require major investment in public transport, roads and essential services.
“While these outer suburbs across the nation accommodate 35% of the nation’s growth over the last five years, they still receive the lowest level of Federal Government spending on infrastructure, such as road and train lines – just 13%.”
“Against that trend, State and Federal Governments have shown considerable support to our district in recent years, and we now look forward to supporting the Metronet program’s southern extension of the Armadale rail line to Byford,” Mayor Zelones said.
“Our residents and visitors should not have to lose hours every day travelling to and from the outer suburbs to work and study on congested roads and limited public transport,” Mayor Zelones said.
“That’s why we were so determined to help our community secure the funding to these critical projects, so that our residents can enjoy a better quality of life through reduced travel times,” Mayor Zelones said.
