Are you Bushfire Ready?

The City of Armadale is encouraging residents to be proactive and reduce fuel loads now, to make their properties bushfire safe ahead of this summer.

From the beginning of October, until 30 November all property owners with an area over 1200 square metres, require a Permit to Burn should they wish to undertake a hazard reduction burn on their property.

Mayor Henry Zelones said a stark reminder to everyone is the devastating bushfires earlier this year in Waroona and Harvey that destroyed more than 180 properties and burned through over 70,000 hectares of forest and farmland.

“As burning is prohibited from 1 December, until 31 March residents need to act now.

“We all know that it is critical that people living in bushfire prone areas maintain protection zones around their properties. It may be the difference between losing and keeping your house in the event of an emergency situation.

“Anyone who has not prepared their property and is not bushfire ready puts the whole street at risk.

“Preparing your home and property for bushfires can make a world of difference for firefighters, who may have to prioritise between which houses are saveable and which are not”, he said.

Permits can be obtained from Ranger Services at the City of Armadale’s Administration Centre on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between the hours of 3 to 4pm. Alternative arrangements may be made by contacting Ranger Services on 9394 5000 during normal office hours.

The City also encourages residents to get a Bushfire Ready brochure and information booklets from the City’s Administration building or by visiting www.dfes.wa.gov.au.
