Turning our waste to energy

Household, commercial and industrial waste from the City of Armadale will soon be diverted from landfill and turned into energy, as part of a $675 million project.

The project will see Australia's first big waste-to-energy treatment plant built in Kwinana across the next three years.

The facility will divert a collective total of 400,000 tonnes of waste from eight Councils south of Perth from landfill each year, which represents a quarter of Perth’s post-recycling rubbish.

That waste will create 36 megawatts of reliable base-load energy, which will be sold to the grid, an equivalent to the electricity needs of more than 50,000 households.

The project is expected to create more than 800 jobs, including apprenticeships, during its construction and once operational the facility is tipped to employ about 60 full-time employees.

The project was co-developed by Macquarie Capital and Phoenix Energy, with co-investment by Dutch Infrastructure Fund and supported by the Rivers Regional Council, which is made up of two elected representatives from the Cities of Armadale, Gosnells, South Perth, Mandurah and the Shires of Murray and Serpentine-Jarrahdale.

Have you heard of the Westport Strategy?

The Westport Strategy is a state government project that will identify a preferred port and land transport network across Fremantle, Kwinana and Bunbury to handle trade and freight transport needs for the next 50 to 100 years.

The major infrastructure project is important to the City because a key east-west freight corridor route from Westport, (Outer Harbour) in Kwinana, to the Tonkin Highway will be Rowley Road.

The progress of this project is vital to the City. The infrastructure associated with the project will have lasting benefits for our community and will provide employment opportunities for our fast growing region. It also has the ability to unlock the full potential of the South Forrestdale – Rowley Road industrial area.

Upgrading key road infrastructure and improving east-west connectivity across the Southern Corridor, while diverting heavy traffic from Armadale Road, will make transport links safer, faster and better able to connect our growing communities.

Burning permit applications available online

Each year, a Permit to Burn is required for the burning of any bush, large quantities of garden rubbish or refuse between 1 October to 30 November 2018 and 1 April to 31 May 2019.

To obtain a permit download an application here and submit to the City at least three business days prior to the intended burn period via email info@armadale.wa.gov.au or in person to the City’s Administration Centre.

Once the application has been assessed, and if approved, a copy of the permit and conditions will be issued to the permit holder, either by email or for collection from the City’s Administration Centre during office hours.

Join Director of the Public Health Advocacy Institute of WA (PHAIWA), Dr Melissa Stoneham, for a workshop and presentation on influencing local level change to improve health at a community level.

The presentation will discuss:

• How your community can take action to ensure a healthy future, in a world where health and wellbeing is recognised as the key to a prosperous community.
• Dr Stoneham and the PHAIWA team will share some experiences influencing change across WA and in other parts of the world.

Dr Stoneham has over 25 years experience in public health, working with local, state and federal government agencies, the university sector and international aid agencies. Melissa’s career highlights include two years working in the Pacific on an alcohol and young people harm minimisation project and 12 months working in Mozambique on a medical waste project. She is the Editor of the Australia and New Zealand Journal of Public Health and sits on a number of Boards and Committees.

National Recycling Week – From Waste War to Recycling Reboot

Did you know that there have been changes to what can be recycled?

To improve recycling, a standard list of acceptable items that can go into the recycling bin has recently been released. This National Recycling Week, 12 to 18 November, get to know what changes have been made including no meat trays, no UHT (silver lined) cartons and no aerosol cans to be placed into your recycling bin. Excess Baggage: The stories of the men and women who returned from World War I

History House Museum’s next exhibition will open from 15 November to 30 April 2019.

Excess Baggage explores what happened to the men and women from the local district that enlisted and survived World War I.

Come and discover their stories through the physical and emotional souvenirs that they brought back.

The exhibition is open during History House Museum open hours:
Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10am to 4pm
Saturday, Sunday and selected Public Holidays, 1 to 4pm.

Carols by Candlelight and Christmas Parade

Come and join in the festive holiday spirit at Carols by Candlelight on Friday 7 December from 6 to 8.30pm in Memorial Park.

Watch well-known colourful characters and performances by local community groups at the Christmas Parade through the Jull Street Mall, commencing at 6pm.

Follow the parade to Memorial Park, where Santa will address the audience. Collect your songbook and LED candles for a gold coin donation, and join the musical spectacular.
