Asbestos is accepted at the Armadale Landfill and Recycling Facility from Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 12.30pm.
Asbestos must be double wrapped in heavy duty plastic (0.2mm thick), securely taped using ‘Gaffer tape’ and labelled ‘CAUTION ASBESTOS’ in at least 5 cm (five centimetres) high lettering. There must be no material exposed and corners must be taped.
Bundles are to be no higher than 60cm (sixty centimetres) or a maximum of 15 sheets per bundle. More than one bundle must be secured together. Loads requiring forklift handling must be elevated on pallets or gluts. The loader driver will determine if the load can be safely unloaded. The asbestos is carried over a distance and must be able to be lifted safely.
Many houses constructed prior to 1990, or in areas developed prior to 1990, may have materials or fencing that contain asbestos. Removal of asbestos must be performed in a safe manner, or by a licenced contractor, as asbestos fibres pose a health hazard.
More than 10 square metres of bonded (non-friable) asbestos must be removed by a licenced and trained individual or business. The weighbridge attendant and landfill attendants may ask for proof of licence.
Disposal of asbestos is governed by Environmental Protection (Controlled Waste) Regulations 2004 and the safe handling of asbestos Regulation 5.4.3 of the Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 1996 and Section 19(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984 and Health (Asbestos) Regulations 1992.
Information regarding the safe handling and disposal of asbestos can be found at
Any issues with the management of asbestos in an occupational environment (e.g. work place) should be referred to the Department of Commerce (WorkSafe WA).
