Birtwistle Local Studies Library

Reopening Soon

Due to unforseen delays in completion of the new building, the Birtwistle Local Studies Library will reopen in its existing location on the 2 November 2009. The delay is temporary and the opening of the new library at Armadale Central Shopping Centre will be schehuled at the earliest possible time.


Find out more... Who was Ivor T Birtwistle?

The Birtwistle Local Studies Library was officially opened on 20 June 2006.

The library is named after the well-known Western Australian and local identity, Ivor Treharne Birtwistle. Birtwistle was renowned as editor of The Western Mail newspaper as well as a historical researcher and was a founding member of the Royal Western Australian Historical Society.

After moving to the district he became an Armadale Shire Councillor in the 1960s. Owing to his keen interest in history, Birtwistle was influential in forming the Armadale-Kelmscott Historical Society and was a driving force behind the building of History House Museum.

Ivor T. Birtwistle’s personal collection, which was donated to History House Museum upon his death in 1976, forms the core of the Library’s collection.  The collection has since been expanded to include information on district history comprising of maps, plans, historic photographs (which can be reproduced), council rate books, biographies, oral histories and family history.

Centenary of the gazettal of the Armadale Township

One hundred years ago, on 26 February, 1909, Armadale officially became a township of Perth. Track some of the major events in the history of Armadale and celebrate the Centenary of our region's dynamic city centre by visiting our gallery of Special Events in Armadale's History. 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month* 9.30am - 3.30pm

*Open 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month for Family History Research - 9.30am - 3.30pm. Two experienced Family History Researchers are available to provide assistance.

The Genealogy database Ancestry is now available for public use at the library.
