Community Safety

The City has taken a strong role in leading safety and crime prevention initiatives in the Armadale community and recognises the importance of working with the Police and other State agencies to help make our municipality a safer place for us to live and enjoy.

The City of Armadale, in partnership with the Office of Crime Prevention and with key community stakeholders, has developed the Armadale Community Safety Plan 2005-10 (PDF 1.8mb).

The City of Armadale is the first local government in the south east metro corridor to have its safety and crime prevention plan endorsed both through Council and the Office of Crime Prevention.

Created in consultation with the Community Safety Advisory Committee (CSAC) and the Community Safety Network (CSN), the Safety Plan is both a strategic and practical document has guided the Armadale Community Safety Advisory Committee will guide the actions of a future ‘Safety Taskforce’ over the next five years.

During the development of the plan Council consulted extensively with local residents, community safety representatives and the Office of Crime Prevention.

Community surveys conducted as part of the consultation process identified domestic violence, road safety, alcohol and other drug use, safety in public places and perceptions of public safety as the key areas of concern to the community.

The Armadale Community Safety Plan has identified each of the areas highlighted by the community and assigned practical initiatives to help address them. Council has worked closely with the Office of Crime Prevention to identify priority projects that qualify for State funding.

In addition, the City of Armadale employs a Community Development Officer (Safety). Current safety initiatives include:

  • The introduction of Closed Circuit Television to Armadale Town Centre (CCTV).
  • The continuing development of a graffiti policy.
  • Facilitates the Armadale Community Crime Prevention Team which is a multi agency approach to reducing community crime in Armadale.
  • The introduction of community safety talks. Talks include residential burglary, graffiti and personal safety, please contact the number below for the latest presentation.
  • Supports the Constable Care program in local primary schools including bullying and anti- graffiti messages.
  • An active role in the Office of Crime Prevention's Burglar Beware. Burglar Beware was developed in response to the unacceptably high level of residential burglary in WA in 2002/03. It is a multi-faceted, whole of government commitment to reducing residential burglary.

If you have any questions related to the above topics, or wider community safety issues please contact the Community Development Officer (Safety) on 08) 9399 0689 or email sratcliffe@armadale.wa.gov.au
