Birtwistle Local Studies Library
The Birtwistle Local Studies Library was officially opened on 20 June 2006.
The library is named after the well-known Western Australian and local identity, Ivor Treharne Birtwistle. Birtwistle was renowned as editor of The Western Mail newspaper as well as a historical researcher and was a founding member of the Royal Western Australian Historical Society.
After moving to the district he became an Armadale Shire Councillor in the 1960s. Owing to his keen interest in history, Birtwistle was influential in forming the Armadale-Kelmscott Historical Society and was a driving force behind the building of History House Museum.
Ivor T. Birtwistle’s personal collection, which was donated to History House Museum upon his death in 1976, forms the core of the Library’s collection. The collection has since been expanded to include information on district history comprising of maps, plans, historic photographs (which can be reproduced), council rate books, biographies, oral histories and family history.
