Building

The City's Building Department offers residents advice on regulations relating to all building activity within the municipality. Formal Council approval is required prior to the commencement of any building works including minor works such as the construction of pergolas and sheds, as well as demolitions.

A building licence is required for the construction of a new building or the alteration, repair or extension of an existing building. If you are unsure whether or not your proposed building works will require Council approval, please contact us.

The City has building plans dating back to the 1960's, although over time some records deteriorated before they could be preserved on microfiche and are no longer available. It is recommended that you contact the Building Department to find out whether your plans are available.

If the contract value stated on the building application is $20,000 or greater then a security bond and Footpath and Kerb Security Fee is required. The administrative Footpath and Kerb Security Fee is to inspect the council verge, crossover or kerbing and administration costs involved with the Security Bond.

Builder uses a cement mixer
It is an offence under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, to undertake building work without first having obtained a building licence from the Local Government. A breach of this requirement carries a penalty of up to $50,000 and a daily penalty of $5,000 for each day the offence occurs.
